October 2008
Dear Youth,
“What does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God?” -Micah 6:8
We have planned an Urban Work Camp for November 14-16, 2008 at Old First Reformed United Church of Christ, located at 4th and Race Streets in the heart of the historic district of Philadelphia. Old First serves the homeless, sick, poor, and neglected of the city, operating a winter shelter and soup kitchen for homeless men. They also are involved in outreach to area women’s shelters, an AIDS hospice, and several homeless shelters and meal sites in neighboring sections of the city.
Here is just a taste of what you can expect as a Work Camp participant:
Orientation and a discussion about homelessness with Old First’s volunteer coordinator
An opportunity to be fully involved in Old First’s ministries of justice and mercy,
including preparing and serving Saturday night’s dinner at Old First’s shelter
Chaperoned free time in downtown Philly (Chinatown, South Street, and more!)
An opportunity to discuss our Work Camp experiences and their impact on each of us
Worship at Living Water UCC Sunday morning
To register, you need to complete and return the following on or after Sunday, October 5:
(click to download)
A Trip Permission Slip
A Shenkel Youth Information Sheet/Medical Form
A Work Camp Financial Responsibility Form
An Old First Work Camp Covenant
$20.00 (The balance of the cost of this Work Camp is being subsidized by Shenkel’s Program, Mission and Service Fund.)
Spaces are limited, and will be filled by the first people to get all the information above to Pastor Bonnie on or after Sunday, October 5.
A packing list and additional details will be shared with all registrants at the mandatory prep meeting (for you and a parent) on Sunday, October 19 at 12:00 noon. I hope you will be able to join us for this great opportunity to meet people from other walks of life, gain new insights about our neighbors in Philadelphia, have fun, and serve God!
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie
